“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”
Aldous Huxley
After longingly gazing at the painting above as it hung for years on the wall at the house of good friends, another very good friend (we share a Floridian history that fated us to connect in New York) who had originally procured said painting surprised me with a copy of my own. Hailing from upstate New York, artist Chris Bell created this wonder. You can check him out at http://www.bellgfx.com/.
It’s one of my favorites. And given the role music has and continues to play in my life (a lifetime ago I was a DJ and a general manager at the Capital District’s Best – the truly singular 90.9 FM WCDB Albany. Out of the many wonders that came out of my experiences there, music was only second to the relationships built there … including meeting my wife.
While this page continues to be built out, enjoy a smattering of tunes. Songs you probably know, but versions that are not official releases.
The Flight, one of WCDB 90.9 FM’s favorite Albany bands, plays at either the former Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY or Saratoga Winners in Cohoes, NY. My recollection of location is admittedly a bit fuzzy.
While WCDB was formative, my musical education started well before. Very good friends who I’m fortunate enough to still be in touch with took our tastes and made music. I’m honestly not sure if Uniting Laurea or From Here on In was the name eventually settled on, but it was always good to watch them play. Whether it was a backyard graduation bash, recording New Years Eve at WCDB, or watching them open for a band from Nyack, NY called Shabutie … who would later rename themselves Coheed and Cambria, Uniting Laurea set an important (autobiographical) tone.
